2026 VA Disability Benefits: How Much an 80% Veteran with Family Will Receive After COLA

Veterans rated at 80 percent disability are seeing updated monthly compensation in 2026, thanks to the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA).

For those supporting a spouse, one child, and two dependent parents, the numbers reflect how family size directly affects pay.

Monthly Compensation for 2026

Based on the latest VA pay tables, an 80% service-connected veteran with a spouse, one child, and two dependent parents can expect approximately $2,686.15 per month.

This total includes:

  • The base rate for an 80% disability rating

  • Additional allowances for each eligible dependent

These tax-free payments are adjusted annually through COLA to help veterans keep pace with inflation.

How Dependents Affect VA Compensation

Dependents significantly increase monthly payments:

  • Spouse only: ~$2,277.15

  • Spouse + child + 2 dependent parents: ~$2,686.15

Each qualifying dependent, child or parent, adds extra monthly allowances:

Children:

  • Under 18, or

  • Enrolled full-time in education, or

  • Permanently disabled

Dependent Parents:

  • Must rely financially on the veteran

  • Evaluated based on VA income and support criteria

Note: Veterans rated below 30% do not receive additional amounts for dependents.

Why the 2026 Rates Matter

VA disability compensation is often a key part of household income. Because payments are tax-free, the full amount can cover essentials like:

  • Housing

  • Food

  • Medical costs

  • Childcare

The 2026 COLA ensures that compensation keeps pace with rising living costs. For veterans whose family circumstances change — marriage, a new child, or supporting an elderly parent — updating dependent information with the VA can increase monthly benefits.
